Elite Sim Golf — SimKit Builder

Build a Permanent Indoor Simulator
Around the Garmin Approach R50

The Garmin R50 SimKit pairs Garmin's all-in-one photometric launch monitor with a fixed Optoma ZW350ST WXGA laser short-throw projector and the Beaver Tail 4×5 hitting mat, plus the aluminum enclosure of your choice. Because the R50 runs Home Tee Hero and shot tracking right on its own built-in touchscreen, this is a plug-and-play kit — no Windows PC required to play. It's a fixed-installation package built for garage bays, dedicated sim rooms, and anywhere a permanent, no-PC setup makes sense. Choose your enclosure size at checkout — the projector and mat are set, and everything ships together via free UPS Ground.

Component 1 — Launch Monitor

Garmin Approach R50

Garmin Approach R50 launch monitor
$4,999.99 launch monitor

The Garmin Approach R50 is an all-in-one photometric launch monitor and simulator that sits on the floor beside the ball, facing downrange. Three high-speed cameras capture more than 15 ball and club metrics per swing, and a built-in barometer adjusts readings for environmental conditions. No ceiling mount, no overhead bracket, and no installation hardware required beyond AC power.

A 10″ built-in color touchscreen runs the whole experience directly on the unit — shot data, impact video review, and Home Tee Hero virtual rounds across more than 43,000 preloaded courses. Ball data is captured automatically; Garmin's included club-face stickers unlock full club metrics like club speed, path, and face angle.

Because the R50 has its own display and processor, it does not require a Windows PC to run — this is a true plug-and-play kit. Simply connect an HDMI cable to the included Optoma ZW350ST projector to mirror the display for a full simulator experience; the R50 also supports third-party software including GSPro and E6 Connect via HDMI + external PC for golfers who want to build out beyond Home Tee Hero.

43,000+ Virtual Courses

Home Tee Hero unlocks a massive library of preloaded courses for full virtual rounds, right from the built-in display.

Impact Video Review

High-speed impact video lets you review your contact on every shot, directly on the R50's built-in screen.

Installation Requirements

The Garmin Approach R50 requires only AC power (or its internal battery) and, for a projected simulator experience, an HDMI connection to the included Optoma ZW350ST projector. It is designed for both permanent and portable indoor simulator installations, and needs no PC to play. Garmin's included club-face stickers are recommended for complete club data tracking.

Component 2 — Included Projector

Optoma ZW350ST — WXGA Laser Short Throw

This SimKit ships with the Optoma ZW350ST, a WXGA laser short-throw projector built as an entry-tier, value-focused option for golf simulators. 3,600 ANSI lumens and a compact 0.521:1 throw ratio fill the enclosure with a bright image from close to the screen, and the DuraCore laser light source is rated up to 30,000 hours with no lamp to replace.

Optoma ZW350ST WXGA short throw golf simulator projector
WXGA short throw

Native WXGA 1280 × 800 resolution (16:10) keeps course graphics and on-screen data legible across the impact screen. At 3,600 ANSI lumens the image holds up well in enclosures with moderate ambient light, and a 300,000:1 contrast ratio keeps detail visible in darker course scenes.

The 0.521:1 short throw lets the projector mount close to the screen, keeping it clear of the swing path and out of the way of the Garmin R50's side placement beside the ball.

Dual HDMI 1.4a inputs plus RJ45 and RS232 ports support both the R50's HDMI mirror connection and simple network control, and 360°-plus-portrait installation flexibility make mounting straightforward. The DuraCore laser is rated up to 30,000 hours — no lamp changes over the life of the bay. As an entry-tier model, the ZW350ST does not include HDR or a dedicated golf/gaming picture mode, making it best suited to compact bays and value-focused builds below 1080p.

0.521:1 Short Throw

DuraCore Laser, 30,000 Hrs

Dual HDMI 1.4a plus RJ45/RS232 connectivity and 360°+portrait installation flexibility, with no lamp to ever replace.

Component 4 — Included Hitting Mat

Beaver Tail 4×5

This SimKit ships with the Beaver Tail 4×5 hitting mat. Because the Garmin R50 sits on the floor beside the ball facing downrange — rather than in front of the mat — the two-piece design puts a stance mat on either side of the center hitting strip, so right- and left-handed golfers each get a proper stance without crowding the monitor's footprint.

Beaver Tail 4x5 golf simulator hitting mat
4×5 two-piece

The 4′ × 5′ footprint keeps the bay compact while still giving either hand a full stance mat beside the hitting strip, without crowding the Garmin R50's ground placement beside the ball.

The replaceable hitting strip insert takes the wear of every shot and is built to reduce joint impact over long practice sessions. When the strip wears, swap the insert instead of replacing the whole mat.

A dense, stable platform sits flat on the bay floor and stays put through full swings, giving a consistent surface that protects the floor underneath and pairs cleanly with the included landing mat in front of the screen.

4×5 Two-Piece

Compact platform that suits right- and left-handed golfers and keeps the ground-based monitor clear of your stance.

Replaceable Strip

The hitting strip insert swaps out when it wears, so the mat lasts well past the life of the strip.

Joint-Friendly Feel

The realistic hitting surface is designed to reduce joint impact through long practice sessions.

Stable Bay Surface

Dense, flat base stays put through full swings, protects the floor, and pairs with the included landing mat.

Landing Mat & Putting Green

The enclosure landing mat is included (6×12 with Birdie 10, Eagle 12, PRO 10x8, or PRO 12x9; 6×15 with Albatross 13). A putting green is an optional add-on available at checkout.

What Completes the Build

The SimKit ships with the launch monitor, projector, enclosure, and mat. These three items round out the installation.

Projector Install Kit

Ceiling mount, 25ft HDMI cable, and 25ft power cable. Positions the short-throw projector at the correct throw distance from the screen without running cables across the floor.

Landing Mat (Included)

6×12 with Birdie 10 or Eagle 12 enclosures; 6×15 with Albatross 13. Sits at the base of the enclosure in front of the hitting mat. Included in the SimKit — sized automatically to the enclosure selected at checkout.

Optional: GSPro Gaming PC

The Garmin R50 needs no PC to play — Home Tee Hero and shot tracking run right on its built-in touchscreen. Golfers who want GSPro or E6 Connect can add one of ESG's turnkey gaming desktops: the 4K Gaming Desktop for GSPro (Intel Core Ultra processor, RTX 5070) or the 1080p Gaming Desktop for GSPro (Intel Core Ultra processor, RTX 5060), both shipped with GSPro and launch monitor software pre-installed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Garmin R50 SimKit — FAQ

The SimKit includes the Garmin Approach R50 launch monitor, the Optoma ZW350ST WXGA laser projector, the Beaver Tail 4×5 hitting mat, and your choice of enclosure size at checkout. The projector install kit (ceiling mount, 25ft HDMI cable, 25ft power cable) and a landing mat (6×12 or 6×15, sized to the enclosure) are also included. The R50 ships with Home Tee Hero and Garmin Golf app access plus club-face tracking stickers. A putting green is an optional add-on at checkout. No PC is required to use the R50.
No. The R50 has its own processor and built-in 10″ touchscreen, so it runs Home Tee Hero and shot tracking on its own — no Windows PC to buy, configure, or maintain. For golfers who want to run GSPro or E6 Connect for expanded course play, the R50 connects via HDMI to a PC and monitor setup, but this is entirely optional. Browse golf simulator PCs.
No. The R50 is a ground-based launch monitor. It sits on the floor beside the ball, facing downrange, rather than in front of the golfer or mounted overhead. No ceiling mount, overhead bracket, or drilling is required for the monitor itself. The projector does use the included ceiling mount for proper throw positioning.
The R50 runs Home Tee Hero and the Garmin Golf app natively on its built-in touchscreen — no additional software purchase required. For golfers who want more course and simulation options, the R50 is also compatible with GSPro and E6 Connect via HDMI to an external PC and display.
No special balls or markings are required for ball data — the R50’s three cameras automatically measure ball speed, launch angle, launch direction, spin rate, and spin axis on standard golf balls. For complete club data (club head speed, club path, face angle, smash factor, and angle of attack), Garmin’s included club-face stickers are recommended. Putter data is only tracked during Home Tee Hero virtual rounds, not in practice mode.
The Eagle 12 (144″ wide) is the most popular and works well in standard two-car garages and dedicated sim rooms. The Birdie 10 (120″ wide) fits tighter spaces like single-car garages or narrow basement lanes. The Albatross 13 (156″ wide, 16:9 screen) is the best choice when room width allows and a wider cinema-scale image is the priority. For a heavier-duty build, the PRO 10x8 (120″ wide) and PRO 12x9 (144″ wide) step up to a High Contrast Gray triple-layer screen, RipStop surround, and a wall stand-off for direct-to-wall installs — note the Pro Series frame is 1″ EMT pipe and buyers either supply their own pipe or add the pre-cut kit. Ceiling height requirements are 9–10 ft minimum for comfortable swing clearance regardless of enclosure.
This SimKit ships with the Optoma ZW350ST, a short-throw 0.521:1 WXGA laser projector. Throw distance still depends on your chosen enclosure depth and ceiling height. Use the Projector Fitment Tool to confirm the ZW350ST will fill your selected enclosure screen correctly given your room depth before placing an order.
The landing mat is included and sized to your enclosure — 6×12 for Birdie 10, Eagle 12, PRO 10x8, and PRO 12x9; 6×15 for Albatross 13. A putting green is available as a separate optional add-on at checkout.
Unlike monitors with a fixed hitting zone in front of the mat, the R50 sits on the floor beside the ball, similar to other side-mounted launch monitors. Both right-handed and left-handed golfers are supported by repositioning the unit to the appropriate side. Garmin’s setup guidance covers the recommended distance and alignment for best tracking accuracy.
The SimKit ships free via UPS Ground within the Continental United States. All components — launch monitor, projector, enclosure, and mat — ship together as a coordinated package. If a golf simulator PC is purchased separately for GSPro or E6 Connect, it ships independently per its own carrier arrangement.
A ceiling height of 9–10 ft is the recommended minimum for comfortable full-swing clearance. Because the R50 is ground-based, ceiling height does not affect monitor placement — it only determines how much swing room is available. Taller golfers with steep swings should aim for 10 ft or higher.
The R50 comes with access to Home Tee Hero and its library of 43,000+ preloaded virtual courses right out of the box. A Garmin Golf membership unlocks additional features and full course libraries beyond the default access included with the unit. The Garmin Golf app is free to download and pairs with the R50 for shot history and stat tracking.
