Finishing Styles for the Premium Gray Screen

Every size is available in three finishing styles. Finishing style is selected as a variant at checkout and changes the price slightly by size — see the full pricing table below.

Classic

2.5″ black vinyl edging with grommets sewn roughly every 12″ around the screen. Mounts with ball bungees. The standard, most economical finish.

Classic with Flaps

Everything in Classic, plus sewn-in 7″ nylon flaps with a 1″ loop-fastener strip along each flap edge. Lets safety cushions tuck behind the screen and hides the grommets from view.

Classic with Loop Fastener

Everything in Classic, plus a 1″ strip of loop (hook-and-loop) fastener along the screen edge. Makes it easy to attach curtains, netting, or safety cushions — a favorite for DIY enclosure builders.

Pair This Screen With a Frame

An impact screen is the projection surface — a frame keeps it taut and contains ball flight around it. Carl’s Place enclosure kits are built to accept these screen sizes directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Premium Gray Impact Screen FAQ

What is the difference between the Standard, Preferred, Premium, and Premium Gray screens?

Standard is a loosely woven single-layer polyester screen built for budget-focused bays. Preferred uses a tighter, silicone-reinforced weave for a sharper image at a moderate price increase. Premium is a three-layer, noise-dampening construction with the smoothest surface Carl’s Place makes in white. Premium Gray is the identical three-layer Premium build finished in high-contrast gray, which absorbs ambient light for better contrast in rooms that cannot be fully darkened. All four are rated for real golf ball impacts up to 250 mph.

Which finishing style should I choose — Classic, Flaps, or Loop Fastener?

Classic (2.5″ black vinyl edging with grommets) is the standard finish and works with ball bungee mounting on any frame. Classic with Flaps adds sewn-in nylon flaps with loop fastener, which is useful for concealing grommets and tucking in safety cushions. Classic with Loop Fastener adds a hook-and-loop strip along the edge, which is the easiest option for DIY builders attaching curtains, netting, or cushions directly to the screen border.

Will this screen fit my enclosure or DIY frame?

Impact screens are sold by width and height in feet across 29 preset sizes, independent of any specific enclosure brand. Measure the interior opening of the frame or enclosure bay before ordering, and choose the closest size at or slightly under that opening. For a pre-matched fit, the Carl’s Place Pro Enclosure Kit ships with a Premium or Premium Gray screen already sized to the frame.

Can I use real golf balls with all four screen types?

Yes. Every tier — Standard, Preferred, Premium, and Premium Gray — is built to take real golf ball impacts at speeds up to 250 mph. The differences between tiers are image quality, surface smoothness, and noise dampening, not ball-impact durability.

How much space do I need behind the screen?

Leave at least 12″ of clearance between the back of the screen and any wall or object behind it. This gives the screen room to flex backward on impact instead of transferring the full force to whatever is directly behind it, which extends the life of the screen regardless of tier.

Does the gray screen really make a difference over white?

Yes, specifically in rooms with ambient light. The gray surface absorbs more projector light than white instead of reflecting it, which produces deeper blacks and better contrast when a room has windows, overhead lighting, or any light that cannot be fully controlled during play. In a fully dark room, the white Premium screen will look just as good and is typically a few dollars less at the same size.

How do I clean an impact screen?

A clean white rag with mild soapy water works for spot cleaning on any of the four screens. For larger areas, a handheld carpet shampooer has also worked well for Carl’s Place screens. Always dry the screen fully after cleaning, and avoid ironing it directly — heat can damage the material.

Can I upgrade from Standard or Preferred to Premium later?

Yes. Because all four screens are sold as standalone products with the same sizing system, an existing frame or enclosure built around a Standard or Preferred screen can be upgraded to Premium or Premium Gray later by ordering the same size in the new tier and swapping it in.

What projector works best with each screen tier?

Higher-lumen projectors help offset the coarser texture of the Standard screen, while Preferred and Premium reward a good projector with a visibly sharper image. Premium Gray is specifically recommended for higher-lumen projectors (3,500+ lumens) in rooms with ambient light. Use the Projector Fitment Tool to confirm throw distance and mounting position for the specific screen size chosen.

Do these screens come with a frame or enclosure?

No. These are standalone impact screen products — screen material only, in the chosen size and finish. For a complete framed setup, pair the screen with the Carl’s Place DIY Enclosure Kit or the Pro Enclosure Kit, both of which are built to accept these screen sizes.

How long do these screens typically last?

Real-world use varies by frequency and swing speed, but Carl’s Place Premium screens have been documented lasting five or more years under regular multi-weekly use. Standard and Preferred screens see more visible wear over time due to the lighter single-layer construction, but all four tiers are built to handle sustained real-ball use.
